Since there are presently no vaccines for the cure of AIDS, prompt and proper application of medication can slow down the progression of HIV and the development of AIDS. The management and care of AIDS patients goes beyond clinical treatment.
Stated below are various approaches in the management and treatment of HIV/AIDS.
-Use of Antiretroviral drugs (ARV): A regular administration of ARV drugs will not only increase life expectancy of the infected person, but also make him/her live a qualitative and useful life, thus contributing to the prevention of the disease. In order to ensure that a common man who is infected with HIV get access to ARV drugs, the Bayelsa State Government has put in place a deliberate policy of providing free Antiretroviral (ARV) drugs for its indigenes.
-Proper treatment of opportunistic infections (OIs)
-Care and support to those infected with HIV/AIDS. They should not be discriminated or stigmatized. In this regards, Bayelsa State Government through the Bayelsa State Action Committee on AIDS (BYSACA) pays a monthly stipend of N10,000 each to registered Bayelsans Living with HIV/AIDS (BLHA) for their Nutritional support.
-Government should enact law (s) that will protect the rights of the People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).
-Many HCT centers should be established and properly funded by Government, private sectors to achieve its objectives of prevention, treatment, care and support services.
Good will message
Dr. Temple R. Iluma (SACA Chairman) advocated that as part of comprehensive response to HIV and AIDS and for the Universal Access to HIV Prevention, Treatment, Care and Support to be achieved,
it require the Leaders, Stakeholders, Individuals, NGOs, CSOs and Private Sectors to integrate Nutritional support into their programmes for the People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in order to ensure access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to enable them meet their dietary needs for an active and healthy life; mindful of the high potency of the ARV drugs, it’s only proper that these people are well fed. He also called on the State House of Assembly to pass into law, a bill that will protect the right of the PLWHA against discrimination and stigmatization.
He further stressed the need for the establishment of HIV/AIDS INSTITUTE in Bayelsa State. This will serve as a hub for Niger Deltans where comprehensive treatment, care and up-to-date support services would be given to the HIV/AIDS victims in the region.
In pursuant of our target to fight HIV/AIDS to finish in our beloved State, SACA hereby welcome partnerships with International Donor Agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations, Private Sectors and the Stakeholders.
